We provide guided kayaking, snorkeling, and kayak sailing tours, and stand up paddling lessons on the South Kohala coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. We provide the best service, use the best equipment, and still have the best prices ( check out our competitions' sites -- bigislandkayak.com; alohakayak.com; oceansafariskayak.com; hawaiipackandpaddle.com; konaboys.com ).
Our pristine location does the rest of the work for us. See the coral gardens of Puako Reef, Waialea Bay, and Crystal Cove; where green sea turtles feed among multi-colored fish. For lots of great photos, check out this link
Whether you're beginner or advanced, we offer a safe and friendly environment for you and your family to enjoy, while learning about our area and ocean life. We also specialize in corporate groups. Besides regular sit-on-top kayaks, we have several Hobie Mirage Drive kayaks, that can be paddled, pedaled, and sailed. Many beginners find they can pedal faster and more easily than paddle, and maybe more importantly, the Hobies are nearly "untippable". Check them out on the Hobie link below.
Enjoy learning about local facts and ocean life from us while on an adventurous guided tour. To learn more about Kohala Kayak and the guided tours we offer, or even if you'd just like to know what else there's to do and see here, call us today.
Guests meet at the Puako boat ramp.
9:00am Orientation — participants outfitted with snorkeling gear and given a brief orientation on paddling technique. Load the kayaks and launch.
9:15am to 12:00pm — Once on the water, the group will paddle about 1 mile (30 minutes) to first snorkeling site. An orientation on how to use snorkeling gear will be given for those needing it. This is especially important for first time snorkelers so that they will be comfortable viewing fish in the water (buoyant snorkel vests available). Otherwise, experienced snorkelers can start on their own.
See the pristine and protected Puako reef with an abundant assortment of colorful fish and other critters. Water depth is about 20 feet, and there are underwater sea arches you can swim through 10 feet down. Water temperature ranges from 74º to 81º ( warmer late spring through early fall ). Visibility varies from 40' to 100'. We spend about an hour at this site exploring the area. Resident green sea turtles usually hang out in the area. Once out of the water, snacks will be served. Casual discussion on coral reef ecology and questions answered on what was seen. After snacks, we paddle to second snorkel site (2 different sites-weather dependent).
12:00pm to 12:30pm — Paddle back to the boat ramp. Total Time Once Arriving at Boat Ramp: 3 Hours +/- 15 Minutes.
